Clifford Design Ltd have been advising Youtubers ‘The Restoration Couple’ with the design and low energy home aspirations of their large scale barn conversion project over the last 2 years. They have been documenting all of the design and build process on their highly successful channel that has 250000 subscribers.

In this video they outline the process we went through to reach the most efficient way of designing and building a low energy home to meet Passive House standards. As part of the process Clifford Design modelled options of fabric build ups and varying U values, demonstrating how the overall energy consumption would be impacted. Varying levels of airtightness were modelled to demonstrate the significant impact air leakage can have on overall building performance.

Clifford Design were able to demonstrate the advantage of spending money and effort on airtightness rather than more insulation to have the most impact on performance and comfort of their home.

Clifford design also modelled the overheating risk to the building and were able to influence glazing to ensure that the home would be both comfortable and energy efficient year round.

‘The savings that Alex helped us make on insulation levels and how we approached the building far exceed what we spent on getting the report done’
